The Business of Bling
You’ve heard that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, right? Well, Mary Weber is a diamond’s best friend.
A certified gemologist, Mary’s been in the diamond business since 1980 when she began work for a jewelry designer and manufacturer in Dallas.
It didn’t take her long to realize she wanted to strike out on her own.
“I worked for a large jewelry manufacturing company and I wanted to make a $16 change to a ring in the jewelry line. It took two board meetings to get the change approved. That’s when I knew I was destined to be an entrepreneur. With a small business, you can make changes quickly and adapt to the needs of your customers.”
And in 1989, she took the first steps towards that destiny by opening her own jewelry store. Today, that store is called Five Star Jewelry Brokers & Gemologists and it’s located Austin, Texas. To, Mary, those Five Stars are more than just a name on a sign.
“My father was in the military and he taught me that ‘five stars’ is the best you can be. When my first location was in the ‘Five Star Center’ I knew that I wanted to call my business ‘Five Star Jewelry’.”
More Than A Jewelry Store
That kind of diversity takes effort. Mary’s invested in continuing education and the latest available technologies.
“We use Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology, so if you can dream it or sketch it, we can build it! We can even provide you with a 3D image so you can see exactly what your new piece of jewelry will look like before it is made. We also have cutting-edge, laser technology that can repair and restore your existing jewelry.”
Customer Care Is Key
Combine Mary’s knowledge and high tech equipment with incredible customer service and you get a successful store. And customer satisfaction is the number one priority for Mary. She even goes so far as to provide free appraisals with purchases, plus free sizing, free cleaning and polishing, and free maintenance inspections.
“My customer’s happiness is my primary objective. I strive to maintain a fun and friendly atmosphere in the store and I hire only associates who are creative, educated and dedicated to the same level of service.”
Despite what everyone says about lack of jobs and the economy, Mary’s biggest challenge is finding those associates that share her dedication to service and work ethic.
“My biggest challenge has been to hire and retain good salespersons. There are so many high tech employers in Austin that pay large salaries. This makes it hard to find honest, loyal employees that will stay with you.”
